Improving life skills through music in Mozambique

The Center for the Acquisition of Academic Competencies for the Future provides extracurricular educational opportunities in Mozambique’s Central and Northern Provinces. Through our Play On grant we’re funding their Music Skills for a Better Future project which uses music to enhance life skills and future employment opportunities for young people.

Preserving and promoting traditional African instruments

The Music in Africa Foundation is a pan-African arts organisation that supports music creators and professionals. Our grant will support their Instrument Building and Repair project, which identifies, preserves and promotes traditional African instruments. The aim is to develop instrument-making and repair across Africa as a profession, and to showcase traditional instruments through performance opportunities.

Providing composition training in the Caribbean

The Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra (ABYSO) is a year-round after-school programme providing accessible music education, instruments, performance and mentorship opportunities for young musicians and music educators across Antigua and Barbuda. We’re supporting their Eastern Caribbean Composes! summer workshop which will provide composition training for students and educators from the region.

Running workshops for young people in Kenya

The Ruben Centre Orchestra uses music to enhance the life prospects of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Nairobi. Our Play On funding will help them to provide music workshops and buy instruments and materials.

Expanding a music therapy project in Guatemala

La Alianza Guatemala works with at-risk children and one element of this is their music therapy project. Our funding, delivered in partnership with Compass Children’s Charity, is supporting the expansion of this project through the purchase of musical instruments and equipment.

Addressing barriers to musical access in Nigeria

Equal Education Chances engages, educates and empowers young people with disability. Their Melody Project is addressing barriers to accessing and progressing in music and they’ll be using our funding to buy instruments and equipment and pay fees for teachers.

New opportunities for young disabled musicians in South Africa

Education Africa focuses on alleviating poverty through education. Their programmes improve education quality and access and create opportunities for disadvantaged South Africans. Our grant is helping them to expand their Marimba Hub programme to include a school in Gauteng that works with young disabled musicians.

Keep up to date with all our Play On recipients via our social channels. We’ll be providing information about our 2025 Play On fund and how to apply from September 2024.
