How to enter

Entries for Jazz and Jazz Ensemble exams can be made online or by post.

Place of assessment

Jazz candidates can be examined via one of the four following schemes:

  1. At one of ABRSM's exam centres, during the one specified Jazz week.  If your preferred centre is not available for Jazz this term, an appointment will be arranged at the nearest centre with Jazz candidates.
  2. At any Special Visit outside the exam period, provided that 1 hour or more of Jazz candidates are entered.
  3. At a Standard visit of 10 hours of exams or more, provided that 1 hour or more of Jazz candidates are entered.
  4. At a Standard visit with a minimum of 3 hours of Jazz exams.

Further information on Special or Standard visits (for UK-based candidates only) can be found within our Regulations.

Jazz assessment criteria

Every performance is unique and jazz examiners arrive at the marks by balancing the various qualities in the playing, using the skill that comes from training and experience.  All ABRSM jazz examiners are selected for their expertise, experience and background in jazz music either as instrumentalists or teachers.
