Being an Effective Teacher

Course details

Being an Effective Teacher is a short online course designed to explore good practice and to develop confident, reflective teachers.

You will be guided through the course by an experienced ABRSM mentor who will:

  • Provide feedback and advice on your current teaching
  • Encourage you to evaluate aspects of your teaching that work well and any areas that could be improved
  • Lead group and individual discussion through online forums and by e-mail
  • Introduce you to a wealth of teaching ideas and resources, providing fresh ideas for your lessons

By the end of the course you will have gained new skills and developed an ability to reflect on your own teaching and assess its effectiveness.

Course content

The course is in three sections:

A) Introductory tasks – designed to assess your current teaching styles and learning needs

B) Current issues in music education – teaching and learning in action

C) Improving your teaching – here you will choose two modules from the following:

  • Planning for a term’s work
  • Working with groups
  • Improvising
  • Assessing and observing your teaching

At the end of the course you will receive a certificate of successful completion for your professional development portfolio.

Cost

When Being an Effective Teacher is officially launched in late 2010 the price will be £295. However, we will be opening the course to a limited number of students from February 2010. For this enrolment only, fees will be £150.
