Presenter biographies
Loo Bang Hean
Born in Ipoh, Malaysia, Bang Hean’s early teachers included Serena Chow and Rickie Oui. He was first prize winner in the inaugural National Mozart Piano Competition in 1987, and following his success in the LRSM Performing Diploma in the same year, ABRSM awarded him a four-year scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music, London. Awards from the Anthony Saltmarsh Prize and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust then funded a year of postgraduate studies with the Hungarian teacher Professor Ilonka Deckers in Milan.
Bang Hean returned to Malaysia in 1995 where he regularly appears in solo recitals, chamber concerts and concerto performances. Orchestras he has worked with include the National Symphony Orchestra, Penang Symphony Orchestra, Penang State Symphony Orchestra and PJ Youth Band.
He has also performed in England, Italy, Brunei, Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore. As an educator Bang Hean conducts masterclasses, seminars and workshops and has been an adjudicator at many music festivals and competitions around Malaysia.
Tim Arnold
Tim graduated from the University of Surrey and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1980. Whilst at the Guildhall he became an accompanist/coach and in 1981 was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Studies. He has since performed often as a soloist, accompanist, chamber musician and orchestral pianist. As a piano teacher he has gained a considerable reputation through specialist teaching with colleges and music centres, university lectures and a thriving private teaching practice.
In 1995 Tim became a mentor for ABRSM’s Certificate of Teaching Course and in 1997 was appointed CT ABRSM Course Leader. In September 2000, Tim’s many experiences as a musician, teacher and examiner came together when he became ABRSM’s International Operations Director for ABRSM. In this role he continues to travel extensively and also delivers workshops and seminars to teachers.
