The joy of performance – Jordan’s story
We asked Jordan Ashman, winner of the 2022 BBC Young Musician of the Year award, to share his feelings about performance and provide some tips.
What’s your name and where are you from?
I am Jordan Ashman from Cambridge.
What instrument do you play and where are you studying? Is there a specific area of music you are most interested in?
I play percussion and currently study orchestral percussion and timpani at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. I love playing jazz and funk with bands, as well as playing in orchestras and brass bands. I also love playing solo percussion.
How does performing make you feel?
It is absolutely amazing and the rush of emotions afterwards makes me feel like I am on top of the world!
What's your most inspiring performance environment?
I love playing in churches.
What makes a great musical performer?
Someone who can bring out their emotions through their performance.
What are your tips for performing to camera?
Make yourself aware that it’s there beforehand but forget about it while performing.
How do you prepare for a big performance?
I imagine being in the performance space as I practise.
How do you deal with nerves?
I either jump around or sit down and focus on my breathing!
What's the biggest challenge you've overcome during or in preparation for a performance?
Dropping multiple sticks in one performance and having to carry on with the wrong sticks for the end of the piece!
