He studied piano with Bernard King and Alexander Kelly, and clarinet with Jack Brymer. As a clarinettist he has performed with professional orchestras, though for many years the focus of his work has been instrumental and academic music teaching at Tonbridge School, where he was Head of Academic Music and Head of Woodwind from 1983–2010.

In December 2009 he was appointed to succeed Clara Taylor as ABRSM Chief Examiner, a post he took up officially in August 2010.

He has four children who between them have taken various ABRSM graded exams on a range of instruments, and he has been entering his own instrumental pupils for Practical and Theory exams for over 30 years.
