The Art of Accompaniment
A one-day, practical workshop for pianists, presented by Walter Blair.
Who is it for?
This course is primarily for second study pianists but may also be of interest to solo pianists with little experience of accompanying and who would like to improve their skills.
To get the most from this course, participants should be of at least Grade 6 standard in piano performance.
Introductory video
Peter Noke discusses the role of the accompanist.
What will I learn?
This workshop begins by considering the unique role and responsibilities of the accompanist, including how this differs from playing in a duet or as a soloist.
Participants will then look in more detail at aspects of accompanying including preparation before the performance, observation and listening skills, how to provide balance to soloists, styling and voicing based on the musical genre and how to bring out the colours in a range of instruments (including different vocal registers).
You’ll also gain tips and strategies on how to improve your sight-reading, tackling transposition and what to do if things go wrong.
