Course overview

Being an Effective Teacher is a 15 week online, distance-learning course designed to explore good practice and to develop confident, reflective music teachers.

You will be guided through the course by an experienced ABRSM instrumental and vocal teaching mentor, who will:

  • Provide feedback and advice on your current teaching practice
  • Encourage you to identify aspects of your teaching that work well and evaluate any areas that could be improved
  • Lead group and individual discussion through online forums and by email
  • Introduce you to a wealth of ideas and resources for effective instrumental and vocal teaching, providing fresh approaches for your lessons

By the end of the course you will have explored new teaching techniques and developed the ability to reflect on your own practice and assess its effectiveness.

Summary of content

The course is in three sections:

  • A) Introductory Work – reviewing your current teaching styles and development needs
  • B) Current Issues in Music Education – exploring key educational theories in instrumental and vocal teaching and learning
  • C) Improving Your Teaching – focusing on your own development priorities, through study of two modules from the following:
    • Assessing Learning
    • Observing and Reviewing a Lesson
    • Planning a Series of Lessons
    • Using Improvisation in Teaching
    • Working with Groups

At the end of the course you will receive a certificate of successful completion for your professional development portfolio.
