Getting my accommodation for Adelaide sorted.

And the thought of going for lunch with Pa and Bagpuss in a moment.

1. My computer appears at last and finally to be behaving itself - not only not switching off, but also maintaining an extremely sensible temperature throughout operations!
1a. An honourable mention to Swell Box for helping me out there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
1b. A silly conversation with my husband earlier in the week, along the lines of:
Me: It looks like someone on the music forum has some ideas which may help me fix my computer
Husband: Who's that?
Me: Swell Box
Husband raises eyebrows.
Me: It's part of an organ.
Husband raises eyebrows further.
Me: I'm not making it sound better, am I?

2. At the weekend we went in to our local camera shop and while chatting one of the people who work there said "Hang on, didn't you have a Coolscan that you can't use any more because you have Windows 7?" and we replied that we did. We were passed an envelope contain a CD and instructions. Hurrah, some kind person out there in the world has written a driver so that the Coolscan will work under 64-bit Windows 7! Last night I did the honours and now my husband has his computer working with the Coolscan once again. He is a very happy man.
2a. Maybe I shouldn't be so happy about this, as I'll be having to do back-ups more frequently than my existing Monday morning task if he gets back in to the swing of scanning all his old slides and negs (2 back-ups of all his photos/personal documents on his computer, and 2 back-ups of all my photos/personal documents on my computer, each to a separate external drive).

3. Yesterday morning's walk in to the office along the canal was enhanced by several coots, who were happy to scoff the lump of bread I had with me specifically to feed them. I also got to see a triplet of baby coots who were very fluffy and cute, albeit rather squeaky. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Tomorrow I am for a change going in to the other office, which gives me a chance of lunch by the river with lots of geese and ducks to talk to.

4. Waking up this morning from an unpleasant dream to discover that it was just an unpleasant dream (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I am pleased to hear that you finally fixed it Maizie. Computers can be so frustrating when they misbehave without obvious reason, but sometimes you just have to eliminate one thing after another until you get to the problem. Hidden fans choked with dust are easy to overlook!

Regarding the Coolscan driver; Nikon provide drivers for Windows Vista on their website, and these seem to work OK on Windows 7 x64.

There are also third party drivers available which are often better than the manufacturer's offering, as I need to get one for my Minolta film scanner. Which reminds me, I have some films I must get sent away for processing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
