Hear, hear!

It does seem to be a feature of Kodaly work in particular - that the overall sound in many lessons is that of many pennies dropping... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

It reminds me of the legend that Mozart's mum used to get him up out of bed by playing an unresolved V7 chord on the keyboard!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

really??? haha your so funny (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

oh by the way im going to have to steal your title as "chopin expert" seeing as i played the c minor polonaise and offficially became the best pianist in my school by a long way...as judged by mr.ian jones.....oooooohh!! yeahh!!

u got nothing 2 say about that have u chris!!!

3 things in response to this

1) I never made the joke, chocolatedog did, I merely found it amusing.
2) I've NEVER once claimed to be a "Chopin Expert" ONCE!
3) I'm not really bothered if you are the "best pianist" in your school to be honest, as frankly there's already plenty of pianists way better than ANYONE on this forum, Kempf, Lang, Kissin, Ashkenazy, Rubinstein, Baremboim, Jando, Bolet, Capova, Perlmuter, the works.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Grow up

P.S. What are the various modes of scales like Mxyolidian, Lydian, etc? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

First degree - Ionian - The major scale
Second degree - Dorian - Minor
Third degree - Phyrigian - Minor
Fourth degree - Lydian - major
Fifth degree - Mixolydian - dominant
Sixth degree - Aeolian - Natrual minor
Seventh degree - Locrian - Minor

They are the same scale, just starting on a different note. For example:

C major -

Ionian (tonic) - C D E F G A B C
Dorian (supertonic) - D E F G A B C D

Notice, this is not the D major scale. It's the C major scale whacked up a tone.

Nope I'm fairly sure it's not made up - I've heard of it from somewhere in the dim and oh so distant past *goes to have a look at old university files*............

Found it - AB Guide to Music Theory part II

"Each mode was said to exist in two forms, authentic and plagal. The plagal form of the mode always lies a perfect fourth below the authentic mode. Plagal modes were distinguished by the prefix 'Hypo-' (Greek for 'under'): Hypodorian, Hypophrygian etc."

So there you have it - not made up at all.........!!

I've never caught a cold over the forum...I didn't think you could... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Hehe, anyway - Oddball - modes are easy, though, aren't they? It's like normal scales only without any black keys, basically, like you've just said yourslef - it's only C major shifted up the scale! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Modes sound neither major nor minor because of this.

The only thing I'm confused about now...(well, I'm always confused about one thing or another) is when someone (can't remember who it was, sorry...was it you, pianoplayer? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) ) said that Chopin used the Lydian 4th. And then somebody else kindly explained to me that a Lydian 4th is the 4th note in the Lydian scale.
But, if the Lydian scale is:

F G A B C D E F

Then how is F# the 4th note? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) *cries* I'm soooo oooseless! (since we're in the U= OO era now! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif))

A lydian scale beginning on C would have F# as the fourth note. The lydian scale is similar to the major except for the fourth note which is raised. So C D E F# G A B C would be lydian scale on C. Sorry, I'm too tired to be articulate tonight. Maybe someone else can explain it better! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
