I was just wondering to myself what the method behind piece selection is with the ABRSM exam pieces? What makes something worthy of being an exam piece at a certain grade? Are there set exercises in technique to be tackled or something that are covered by each?

On a slight tangent, I know that at least for myself, some of the pieces have led me on to buying other books and exploring other material by the same or similar composers. I'm assuming that this is part of the desired effect, or am I just a sad case sheet music buying addict? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Apparently, the Board do a lot of consultation and get suggestions from teachers as to what could be included...I've never come across a teacher who has been consulted, but this is the line the Board takes.

I know of a couple of teachers who have been consulted about syllabi (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Wow...that's amazing...I wonder whether they all live in the same part of the country?

I guess it's possible it's fairly London-centric, but I can't be at all certain of that...
