They say you learn something new every day, and I've just learnt that John Barry, the film music composer, is a Yorkshireman, born in York. Granted not an earth-shattering fact, but considering I live next door to York, I'm surprised I didn't know this before.

I'd be interested to find out what bits of trivia others have learnt today!

Our universe is likely to be a finite but unbounded and expanding hyper-dodecahedron that loops back on itself in 6 physical dimensions, in addition to the three which we can directly perceive.

At least, that is the favourite theory of cosmologists and astronomers these days.

Today I learned that the river-bus runs along the River Seine in Paris ever 25 minutes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I am SO excited about this little bit of information and am hoping to put it to good use later this Spring...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/woot.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/party2.gif)

There was a documentary about John Barry on the television not so long ago, and he was interviewed talking with his composition teacher Dr Francis Jackson, the former organist of York Minster, who is 95 years old and still giving recitals.

The song 'Danny Boy' was published one hundred years ago this year.

... and the words were by an Englishman. The song was only adopted by Ireland when it became associated with the Derry or Londonderry air.

I wonder if DC and I saw the same programme on the news this morning!

Are you saying that it was originally a poem with seven lines of five feet and one of six, that just "coincidentally" was found to fit with Londonderry air?

And obviously a catholic poem too, since it contains the line "and kneel and say an Ave there for me"

I didn't see the programme - I had heard that it was not a love song from a girl to her lover, but a father to his son. Did that come up?

Thank you. I have now found "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day" will fit the tune of With Cat-like Tread from the Pirates of Penzance. I don't know if it fits all the way, but maybe I can modify that too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

It seems there were quite a few composers born in Yorkshire.

Dr James Hugh Reginald Dixon (organist and composer) was born in Stockton in the Forrest, just outside of York.

Dixon was considered quite outrageous in his day, wearing both earrings and high heels. Apparently he believed that wearing gold earrings created some kind of magnetic force which helped to improve eyesight.

And there's more?..

Edward Bairstow was born in Huddersfield, and became Master of Choristers at York Minster.

Bairstow's 'Lamentations', which we sang this morning, was first performed at York 70 years ago today; or so I am told. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I suppose we have to have some cross-Pennine competition, so I'll just mention that John Ireland was born down the road from here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
