You have good taste DC! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) I'm hoping to sing it for AH Music this year... Good luck to you too, Fiona! xx Hi DC! Just thought I'd update you quickly, seeing as you've decided to look at Santa Lucia instead. I was given the music for Summertime today, and we're starting work on it on Monday (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). I haven't heard Santa Lucia before, but I'm sure we've got it in the music department somewhere so I'll try and hunt it out! |

Yes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/eek.gif) Well, the top note is either F sharp or G, so I think it is. I sang Pie Jesu last year though, and if I remember correctly that had a G in it too... |

A quick update - the original key of "Summertime" is B minor. And while it doesn't go stratospherically high (although some of the solos in Porgy & Bess do) it does need tons of control to sing properly.

I've got it in the key of A minor (if my memory serves me right) and the first note is E.

I've just dug this thread out as I just went through Summertime to see if I like it. My key is B minor but i've just found this free downloadable backing track in A minor for anyone that's interested:-

Thanks for the link, Possum. So do you like it? I think so. I feel it will be good for me, lately my voice has gotten much heavier in the middle and i'm keen to hold on to my lighter notes so I think it will be nice to sing something more controlled and higher. I love singing Care Selve which seems to be the same singing technique (if you know what I mean, Handel and Gershwin (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) ). I've always loved Gershwin when piano was my first instrument, I would have never imagined singing it though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Sorry to drag up an old thread! (It has been interesting re-reading it though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )
Anyway...the need to sing Summertime in the Ella Fitzgerald bluesy style has returned as a niggle and I won't be happy until I've attempted it! Almost four years on ( (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) ) from this thread being started, I would like to think my voice has progressed well enough to attempt Summertime (still not in the original key though). I was just coming up to grade one singing then, and am now grade five. I've been doing a search for a transposed version but have had no luck so far. Does anybody have a copy or know of a good transcription I could get hold of please? Thank you. (For those who have heard me sing, please fee free to add any comments as to why I should/shouldn't attempt this. Thanks). |

Hi Daisychain,
That version (rather than the operatic version) is on the Grade 4 syllabus list for LCM Popular Vocals. So I would have thought it'd be fine. My student is doing in, and singing it in B minor but an octave lower than the operatic version. Good luck, it's a gorgeous song |

You could download it from Musicnotes.com - A US site I use a lot and they're pretty good. They have a number of pre-transposed options available, with information on the range of the transposition used.
