I first discovered these forums (fora?) in 2009 when I was trying to find out about becoming an applicant in order to enter pupils for exams. Nearly three years later, I've finally filled out my online form to become an applicant! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) I do have one question though - I've only got the one pupil to be entered but her mum said she won't be available for one week in June. Is it easy enough to make sure the girl isn't given a date during the week she won't be able to make it? Not having done this before I'm not sure how it works... It's not that simple - you can REQUEST a week, but you can't ask to avoid one.

In most people's experience though the board are pretty helpful if it turns out there is a clash. Some would advise sending an email following your application. The best you can do at point of entry is to pick a week as far from the week you want to avoid as possible.

Also if there is any way you can find out which weeks your local centre is using it may be useful.

Congratulations, by the way, and best of luck with your first candidate!

Well done, tetrachord. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) When you make the entry, send an email to the board telling them the week your pupil is not available. You'll get a standard reply saying that they can't promise anything, but they usually manage to avoid problem weeks - the only issue would be if your centre was only open for that particular week.

Two things to do, I think. Neither of them guaranteed, but both have worked when I've tried it.....

The first is to put a last available date in which is earlier than the time she's away. Obviously this is only an option if the missing week is not the start of the exam season.....

The second is to e-mail the Board and explain the situation and ask them to help. They will reply and say that they can't guarantee it....but chances are they'll manage it.

Oh, and well done on getting your registration sorted (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

One local teacher here has, in the past, (on the paper version of the form) added a note to say that if the exams were to be scheduled for X date, the candidate should not be entered. I didn't have an applicant number to start with, so he used to enter my candidates along with his, and did this for one wee boy I put in on one occasion who was booked to go on a school trip. The dates clashed, and the Board didn't enter him.

If you prefer to enter online, I'm sure an email immediately following the entry would be fine - but maybe ring beforehand to check.

Congratulations, tetrachord!

Apparently the most useful thing you need to put on your follow up email that everyone else has mentioned above is your applicant number, but I always add the submission number as well, - it appears when you make the entry.

In my experience pick a week when your pupil is definitely available and tell them that she is not available. That will guarantee that they will choose that week for her exam. I've used this "trick" many times and it never fails to work. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Yes, I think they do keep to that. Might be a good idea if your pupil's unavailable week allows enough space before it.

Just a wee update - I emailed the mum explaining the situation so we could decide how to proceed - and at the next lesson she told me it would be alright because if she's not available Granny will be present! So I don't need to worry this time round.

I've literally just entered my pupil for her exam. I stated the third week as the preferred week but I'm still going to aim for the very first available date to be on the safe side. I must admit I'm already panicking that I'm doing it all wrong - I suppose this is normal for your very first exam entrant? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

I think it might be normal for most people, lots of the time. I always worry that I've done something wrong.

Nevertheless, well done (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yay.gif) - you've broken the ice. Onwards and upwards! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
