Just a note of caution.

grrrrrrr

Sorry but I agree....

He doesn't need to do everything everyday on any particular instrument he can focus on improving his weaknesses and that might mean technical exercises rather than playing through exam pieces.

Started the scales before school schedule today as that's when I'm free to help her with her melodics as I'm often teaching when she wants my help and after struggling with pupils' melodics I'm not keen to go through hers.

Well apparently, I don't know much (like when I say she has gone too far/ not far enough in a chromatic)..... and I'm wrong and her 'wrong' note is right! This is going to be fun! And apparently the Eb is hard to find!

Right the pieces are done and two are very good!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

He knows all the scales but it is unlikely they will be perfect as he is not consistent - could get them right, could foul up one note. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Chromatics - has memorised the hardest one but it's slow

Doms/Dims - can do them but needs to think for more than 30 seconds about the notes but once playing finds them easy.

Sight-reading - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) but will at least get 7 marks at the moment!

Aural - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) but should get some marks currently even if it would be an overall fail.

So could he pass? I know, a bit difficult to say but some wise teacher could give me a rough indication.

Did I mention he can't fit in any practice next week!

Not a wise teacher - just an ignorant parent - but he passed last time! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Seem to remember things were even worse then. How's half term looking practice time wise? That could surely make all the difference.

2 good pieces = 25 + 25, not so good piece maybe 20 = 70 marks

Being fairly pessimistic

Sight reading 10

Aural 10

Scales 10

= 100, pass.

Feeling some low level tension beginning to creep up.

DS cannot practice the bassoon at all next week. The following week is half term and he will be chained to his bassoon (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) but after that he will be lucky if he has six practice sessions before his exam and he won't be able to fit everything in with each session.

I would love to find an exam that just examines pieces! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Try TG (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) The scales can be swapped for a study and the aural is more user friendly or can be changed for an improv. There is also the LCM Leisure play exams where I think you play 4 pieces.

At the moment I could do with exams/ auditions that just test scales and technical exercises. I know that my son is supposed to be doing these at the moment, but surely he needs to practise his pieces at some point? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

No! Once he's fine with his scales and tone he'll just be able to play the pieces (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Doesn't work too well the other way round though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Yes, you are right, Notmusimum. He doesn't really have time to do both at the moment, and the technical stuff is more important.

Not to invade the parent's forum, but... what? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) I have always been used to thinking the other way around - that pieces are the primary focus, and technical work is just there to supplement and improve the pieces. I know lots of wonderful musicians who don't practice scales, etc. regularly, but none who don't practice pieces! And even in terms of exams, pieces make up most of the marks...

However it's approached a sound technique is what enables pieces to be played well.
Sometimes this can be built through repertoire but sometimes it benefits from specific technical exercises.

You're approaching it from a pianist's perspective, I think, Lilly763. Wind players have to work on tone and breathing correctly to produce a beautiful sound. They also need to play in tune. This tends to be achieved by playing long notes and scales and playing into a tuner. I don't have to tune my piano every time I use it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
