Just found out I have to have 2..... im really nervous

do they hurt?? my dentist says ill get a local anaesthetic, but im still really worried (my friend whose had one says the needle is massive! is that true??)

No! Your friend is being mean, I've only ever had two but they were at the same time too, doesn't hurt at all - even the needle barely stings.

Just your mouth goes rather numb for a while, which is odd, then it aches for a night or so.

Once you get past the needle (I've had quite a few fillings (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)) it's not so bad. Just try and keep calm through that, and the rest isn't so bad: the sounds are pretty grim but it doesn't hurt. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Don't worry! I am the world's biggest whimp when it comes to needles, dentists, long pointy objects anywhere near my mouth...

I've unfortunately had 4 fillings (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) (and 2 extractions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)) and as you can see, I have lived to tell the tale!

The anaesthetic won't hurt you, it might scratch a little, and feel slightly odd, but it shouldn't be painful. You shouldn't feel the drill itself because the anaesthetic is given time to work!

So, really, it's not that bad. It also helps if you relax, as tensing the muscles in your face makes it more painful.

The anaesthetic doesn't hurt anywhere near as bad as biting your tongue or walking into a blackberry bush. Its just a little scratch, and then it goes numb so you can't even feel it! It might ache a bit, but thats all. Just don't try to drink with a numb lip, unless you don't mind getting covered in it ! Oh, and don't try playing a wind instrument (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

On the other hand, I had root canal treatment and it hurt like..@@**!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

I'm a terrible wimp at the dentist. Once or twice my lovely dentist has put some anaesthetic gel on a cotton wool pad on my gum so I didn't even feel the needle - might be worth asking nicely...

You are lucky, last time I had a filling was during a root canal, and for the second part of the treatment I wasnt given a needle or any kind of anaesthetic.

The filling itself I didnt actually feel that much, so dont worry.

Tell your dentist that you are worried and ask for some gel to numb your gum before he injects. Then you won't feel anything at all. The needles are tiny by the way.

Hiya, no need to worry about fillings, just a really short stinging sensation and that's pretty much it! It's quite funny having a numb mouth, although don't make the mistake I once did of trying to eat noodles... it was pretty messy :-D

I often tell the dentist I dont want an anaesthetic if its not a deep filling. You get a bit of vibration but unless he goes a bit too deep and catches a nerve (then you really know about it) it doesnt really hurt.

I've had fillings but always refused the anaesthetic.

Even then the painful bit isn't that bad.

The anaesthetic is there so it doesn't hurt and you shouldn't feel the needle especially if anaesthetic gel is added to the area before hand.

I turn down the anaesthetic as I don't like having a numb face... nothing to do with whether it might hurt or not.
