A young lady who playing in the same orchestra as me has recently moved to Peterborough.
She's been trying to find somewhere to play but without much luck so far. One windband told her they already have enough flutes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I know that she could look at online listings but as she's been trying without getting lucky so far I wonder if anyone has any suggestions. She's a grade 8 flautist and has a car so can travel within reason. Thanks. |

I grew up in Peterborough but I was only involved in school/county organised orchestra. There is now the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra - I know nothing about them but their website is here: http://www.cpso.org.uk/
There are one or two other groups a bit further afield - Stamford and Huntingdon area but it depends where your friend lives as to what is accessible. http://www.amateurorchestras.org.uk/oeanglia.htm |

That's the problem with being a flautist (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif). Someone apologised to me recently, saying they hadn't invited me to join their orchestra, because it went on numbers of years you'd been around.
I am afraid I don't know of any ensembles in Peterborough. Could she see if she could form her own wind quintet or something? |

As she commented on her facebook wall " All I can think is Abney Orchestra would not do this!!!" It seems there are not enough true community orchestras who work with the instruments they get rather than putting limits on numbers. I'm not saying there's no place for standard set ups but where are people going to get experience if everyone sticks to that? |

Cambridge is quite far but if she's really desperate there are things going on in university colleges e.g. I think Trinity and Queens' (and perhaps others) have orchestras with non-university members. The other downside is that those don't go on all year and there may not be much on this term because of exams.

I'm lucky - as a newly returned cellist, I've found a community orchestra near Chester that accepts all comers and any instrument. At the moment we approximately have: 5 1st and 4 2nd violins; 2 violas; 5 cellos (if we're all there); 1 bass; 5 flutes (incl 2 who play piccolo); 6 clarinets; 1 bassoon, 1 bass recorder doubling bassoon (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ; 1 horn; 4 trumpets; 1 trombone; 2 tubas. We have a percussionist n an ad-hoc basis. |

Depending on what style of music she likes.
I play in 2 Concert Bands. One based in Peterborough, rehearsals at Oundle Road Baptist Church (PE2 9PB) on Monday evenings 7:30. The other based in Bury, rehearsals in the Village Hall (PE26 2LH, 18 miles away) Saturday mornings at 10:00. I'm sure either or both would welcome her. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) There is also a Symphony Orchestra who rehearse on Tuesday evenings. Thorpe Primary School PE3 9UG. Don't know anything about them though. David |

David do you have contact details you could PM me please? It was a windband she was turned down by as they said they had enough flutes. |

On one hand, I prefer playing in set ups where there are the standard amount of flutes, but there doesn't seem to be the community groups around either.
Maybe she could ask the local music service if they know of any? |
