I have just booked my first ever composition lesson. Before I made the call all those unhelpful thoughts ran through my mind. Why on earth do I want to learn composition at the age of 41? Why can't I interest myself in flower arranging like the other ladies in the neighbourhood? However I persisted and I have booked myself a lesson with a freelance composer. She's also going to teach me theory. I have passed grade 5 but I would like to get grades 6-8 under my belt as well. I have no idea what I've let myself in for. I'd just like to try.

Sounds exciting!

I am looking into the LCM composition exams at the moment...this thread is all about them.

I've never studied it except in school though. Be very interested to hear how you get on (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Good luck with your lesons - composing is great fun - I'm now halfway through the Grade Two exam work (in terms of items completed).

Yesterday I had my first theory/composition lesson. It took place in a garage complete with grand piano and harp. It is funny how you can walk off the street and meet a perfect stranger and in no time be having an indepth conversation about harmony. We worked on the Big 6 Theory Workbook. I had forgotten a few definitions about passing notes but on the whole I could follow my teacher's line of reasoning. On the composition side she gave me the lyrics of a Shakespearean song from The Merry Wives of Windsor. My task is to set those words to music - melody line only. I think I am going to like this teacher.

Sounds really exciting. I started Grade 6 a short while ago and just felt I was going to connect with it all, and I do really enjoy it but I appear to run out of time in the week what with working full time, looking after my children and our house, Guides and working for Grade 6 piano.
