I want to try and write an arrangement of an icelandic folk song!
http://www.althingmusic.com/samples.php
You can hear it on this link (Track 2- second half of it!)
and these are the lyrics I found:

Móðir mín í kví, kví

Móðir mín í kví, kví
Kvíddú ekki því, því

Ég skal ljá þér duluna mína
Duluna mína að dansa í

Ég skal ljá þér duluna mína
Duluna mína að dansa í

but I can't figure out how to pronounce ljá - on the recording it sounds like 3 syllables of loaw-yah-da kind of thing, and I can't hear að at all! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)
It's a lovely piece though - we used it as a starting point for a gcse drama portfolio, though I preferred the recording we had then, with a child singing. We were told what the song meant at some point, but I've forgotten most of it...something about a young woman secretly had a baby and had to leave it to die because she was single or something and it was against the tradition and the song is the ghost of the baby telling her it doesn't blame her...though most of the internet stuff classifies it as a children's song or lullaby, which doesn't quite seem to fit the bill...oh well..
If anyone with better hearing than me could tell me how many syllables are in each word, that would be really great!

I hope anacrusis doesn't mind me volunteering her as one person on here who knows or knew Icelandic people... I wish I could help but my knowledge of Icelandic is non-existent! Sounds like a lovely song...

I had a look, (although I don't know Icelandic ) but I couldn't match the sounds to the words at that point. I did wonder if there was something missing. It was late ... I hope someone can help !

Moh ther / meen / ee / kvee / kvee (voiced th)
Kvee doo / eck ee / thvee / thvee (unvoiced th)

Yey / skal / loaw / tha / de luna / meena (voiced th)
Doo luna / mina / ath / dansa / ee (think it's a voiced th but it practically disappears)

Yey / skal / loaw / tha / de luna / meena
Doo luna / mina / ath / dansa / ee

I can't resist a language mystery...

It's a beautiful song!

It is easier to hear what it all sounds like when it's just the soloist - the harmonies are lovely but they obscure the words a bit. (from about 1.20)

á is like german au, or english ow (the german is better-sounding), j is like y, so yes, lyow would be the right pronunciation of ljá. I've notice in the only Icelandic song I can sing (interpreting the word "sing" loosely...) that Icelanders seem to fill in between some words with extra sounds, a bit like some folk pronouncing "drawing" as "drawring" or "February" as "Februrary",and sometimes the next word, which in this case is þér (thyer, or th-yeah-r) is not enunciated separately but run together- I think this is what is happening here, and then straight on to duluna mína.
Icelandic - I love it! can't understand that much of it but one day I intend to learn it. Once I've learned how to play my recorder properly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Icelandic harmony is loooovely!

Thankyou! I was also given a link to a language forum by Helen, and a link from there to a pronunciation guide! So with that and your help I think I've figured it (just about!)
Thank you for all the help, I'm amazed there are actually people who were able to help! It was a bit of a random request... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Hahaha...it will be awful!!
I love the song so much though! It was one of only a few songs that silenced everyone in our drama/music group, the other two being Tom McRae's '2nd law' and Einaudi's 'Le Onde'
