I start the final stages of my Masters some time in October... looking forward to my 10,000 word thesis... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

10,000 is nothing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

The maximum limit for my PhD thesis is 100,000 words or 300 pages (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) I hope we don't have a page limit. I'm expecting to have around 400 pages once all the maps and graphics are in. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) I'm a bit concerned though because it looks like my thesis may only be 90,000 words or so. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) That's well above the MPhil limit (so they won't be able to downgrade me on that basis) and 10,000 words isn't really enoguh for another thematic chapter but most people in my area end up with around 97,000-99,000. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Hope everyone starting uni settles in well. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I must admit that I'm very glad that I don't have to go back for another year. Work is much more fun, and I'm getting paid to do it. Learning loads too.

Best of luck to all the new starters.

Ooooh another Chem Eng-er. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Hope you enjoy your year out. Well worth doing and it will all seem so much easier when you get back!

The second year is definitely the worst.

I've never heard of a page limit at my Uni, I've even heard talk of multi-volume thesis! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I would actually really enjoy the opportunity to think about that size of thesis. I started a PhD in English lit about 12 years ago (I'm doing Fine Art now) and got about 10,000 words into it quite easily (I had to withdraw because I was rather ill.. and never went back to it). So keeping it to the 10,000 is going to be difficult. But that's not all... I do have an exhibition of about 30 paintings to produce in the next year, another 12,000 words roughly on seminar reflections, field-trips, gallery visits, private commissions and possibly a large community voluntary arts-project that I'm having a prelim meeting about this afternoon.

So the thesis will be the easy bit (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

You could always write a book! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

As I'm doing maths the whole word count thing is totally stupid since a lot of it is equations etc, it was rather humerous when we submitted our MSc theses that there were stupid regulations saying you *had* to put the number of words on the contents page, I think most people just put some random number of around 10,000 or so.

Maths PhD theses can be anywhere from 70 to 200+ pages, interestingly the pure maths ones tend to be on the short side, and the applied ones longer! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I'm not sure I could stretch my knowledge of maths to 70 pages! (Mind you, I'm not doing much better on my own PhD thesis - 300 words down, several thousand to go (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) - hope you are doing better Babybird!)

We need a PhD's thread! Do we have one? I can't remember. If not someone should start one!
