I think their website is quite poor. Very little information and if you click on things you can easily find yourself looking at the main conservatoire details, and it's not clear what is just the junior section. Their brochure was much more informative and it would help if the website were similar.

Daughter is delighted and so are her dad and I. I'm also relieved that I don't have to try and find a clarinet teacher when she changes school in September.

Great news. I heard a student from Birmingham Junior Dept playing at our local festival yesterday - very impressive. I?m sure she?ll have a great time.

I liked the emphasis the website placed on performance opportunities (which I know would appeal to my children) and especially the fact that information on 'Fees and Bursaries' was just a click away. My experience of a lot of musical things for children is an attitude of "If you need to ask the price - you can't afford it."

I don't know what systems are employed at Birmingham for performance opportunities. In our experience solos have to be competed for by audition. The small and large ensembles tend to have concerts at the end of the year and the large ones termly. There are external opportunities but these are on a selection basis. the composers concerts are interesting but you only get to play in them if you happen to be in a composition group with someone who's work is selected or you are invited by them to play on their piece.

Fantastic news. Someone else on a new phase of their journey. Enjoy!

With regard to Notmusimum's comments, interesting to learn how performance opps differ between JDs. RAM has (or did last year, I'm a past-it!) informal small performance events termly for teacher's students to play to each other and parents. And there were annual competitions for some instruments. Big opps for performance (solo and ensemble) were by competitive audition, the standard was high (but that's why you're there), and only the very best got through. Coming from a county where there were a LOT of opps for performance - work in progress as well as polished material - daughter felt that maybe performance ability dropped because of absence of opps, but on the other hand perhaps it was just that self-criticism had improved!

Agree about it took a year to settle in. Do you think younger ones take to it more quickly?

If it takes a year to settle then she'll only just be settled when it's time to move on. I do hope we haven't left it too late for her to get something out of it. She'll have to give up county orchestra which she loves, but can still join in some of their events and thinks she will still be allowed to tour with them next summer.

I don't think it's about settling but becoming familiar with the set up and learning what's what. Sadly that does take a year to od.

I think it does vary, so be prepared to offer support but hope for the best ... sorry if we cast even the smallest blight on your happiness. On reflection I can think of people who went in sixth form (so for two years) who flew.
