Hi everyone,

I am studying music at uni and I am thinking about doing an MA in performance at music collage (well thats my dream anyway lol)!

I was just wondering if anyone who attended music collage could give me an idea what the auditions are lke. Especially scales lol. Coz I think I play well but I am not brilliant at scales but I am not dad too. How many scales do thay ask u? and How good do they expect them to be.

Any info would be great

Cheers

hi all,
Sorry i can't really answer nikeemp's question since i don't study in the UK...& i assume you are there. I just recently did an entrance audition for graduate program for a university. Not a music sch/college. So it would be different i assume..but all i had to do was play 3 pieces from 3 different periods all memorzied. They then gave me aural and written placement exams since i dont' have an undergrad music degree to prove I am proficient.

Anyway, i have a question myself and hope someone here can answer it especially if you are a music student (undergrad or graduate). How is it like being a music major - especially in piano studies. How many hours are we expected to practice in a week? and so forth. Is there more playing the piano than studying books?

thanks!!

Hello
I did an MMus in performance at music college after uni; the best advice I can give you is to learn your scales! You will need them when you get there (scales exams, anyone?) so learn them now. I didn't learn mine until I made a conscious effort to do so - I sat down every morning at seven in a practice room and played scales for an hour by ear: C major, then B major, Bb major etc etc etc. I didn't move on to the next scale until I'd played the first one once correctly. It was hard work for a week or so then it got easier, and (seven years later) I can still recall pretty much all of them. Just think, when you go on to music college there will be lots of undergrads who have been there a couple of years and can do all this already. Do you want to be at the top of the tree of the bottom?
Hope this helps

And here I was thinking collage was an art technique - a music one would probably look really cool! (sorry! couldn't resist - I should maybe have been a proofreader instead of piano teacher!! English is such a strange language!!!) Collage is art, college is an educational establishment!!) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Perhaps we should be members of the Pedantic Piano Teachers Club (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Yes - good idea. If it doesn't exist we should start one!!
Note for CD - I was a proof-reader in a previous job - old habits do die hard.

Sorry nikeemp - back on topic from now!
