Newbie here - just wondering if anyone has any experience of the national youth recorder orchestras because I have a few (many!) questions
With the Easter Course which is not auditioned - what ages/abilities normally go, and which recorders are they expected to play? For the Summer Course audition, is there sight reading? Thanks so much! |

I asked this question about 3 years ago lol.
No first had experience of Easter course but daughter has done summer course twice. Last year there was someone on summer course was aged about 11 in the training ensemble. The upper age limit has been raised to 25. Daughter has all the recorders and has taken them all she says some of the younger people take descant and treble only. There is a chance to play great bass and conta bass which can be fun. http://nyro.org.uk/ They send out set works to be learnt for audition can't remember if there is sight reading (daughter didn't do summer course this time, she's hoping to do something with them in autumn). NYRO is a really good organisation and the staff are very supportive, the administrator is approachable and helpful. Anything I don't know I can easily find out from daughters teacher if you have further questions. |

My recorder pupil auditioned for NYRO last year (and got in). I've just found the email she sent me after the audition, which describes what she had to do: she had to play two contrasting pieces, play two set studies, one for treble and one for bass, and do some sight reading on the treble. The two set studies were quite tricky, as I recall.

Thanks to both of you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Interesting to hear it now goes up to 25 - that means I have plenty time to ease myself in I guess by starting with the Easter course then trying for the summer one. Notmusimum - has your daughter done any of the taster days? |

Notmusimum - has your daughter done any of the taster days? My daughter has done the taster days and enjoyed them. Her teacher is one of the course staff and runs the taster days. It doesn't matter what age you are, give the audition a go, they are very supportive. The set works are meant to be tricky (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

My daughter did the Easter course as an experiment before auditioning for the summer course, which she did twice - same years as notmusimum's daughter. When she did the Easter course, which must be about 3 years ago now, the age range was about 11 to 18. She was about grade 6 standard at that time, but there was a wide range of abilities, including some people from the main (ie summer course orchestra). She found it a very good introduction to NYRO because she worries (to an unreasonable extent!) about finding her way round by herself and everything happened within a small area at the Easter course!! She thoroughly enjoyed all three NYRO experiences - but likes to spend time at home too much to go this year!

Thanks again! Halka, that sounds great and I think this will be my plan (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It is possible to audition at the Easter course for the summer one so that sounds like a good plan. |
