If the pupil is new to musicianship I would work through all the earlier grades first just to make sure they are OK with the basics. ( eg echo with an ostinato at Grade 2 seems to be a difficult one for some people ). I also give lots of homework sheets based on the specimens in the books. You can expect different skill levels on the different tests with each candidate so sometimes you have to start at a much more basic level with any they find hard. Make sure you keep copies of any material you produce yourself to re-use with future candidates as this can take a lot of preparation time !
