First semi final is tomorrow on BBC 3. In the meantime, listen to this truly amazing song from Turkey in 1980... clicky (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

This is my favourite - Secret Garden, Nocturne 1995
This brings back a lot of memories for me, some painful, but it's a beautiful piece of music. |

Qualifiers I hope tonight: Austria, Estonia, Denmark, Russia, Ukraine, Netherlands, Cyprus, Belgium, Belarus and Serbia A few of those gone from the first semi. Notably, much of the former Yugoslavia has been eliminated, and Greece will have to find someone other than Cyprus to give their 12 points to... Next semi is tomorrow evening. |

My kids and I always play "Eurovision Key Change Bingo". Within the first ten seconds of the song, you place your bet on how may times it will change key before the end of the song. Have a go, it's hilarious!

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/hides.gif) (IMG:http://www.emoticonsfree.org/wp-content/uploads/character00129.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I liked the song by Hadise (Belgian entry but a Turkish style piece) from a few years ago. Not inspired by this year's selection though! The modulation bingo game is a brilliant idea - please can I pinch it for my more advanced pupils? |

Yes but you will be hard pressed to spot an actual modulation. What usually happens is a sudden key change up a tone or three, towards the end of the song, for no good reason, making no musical sense at all and usually accompanied by an increase in volume, arm waving and facial gurning. |

The Eurovision Song is almost becoming a genre of its own. We could maybe list the essential ingredients? I'll start off.
1) Scantily clad female(s). 2) Gratuitous key change for no apparent reason (as noted by Katemorrisviolin). Feel free to add! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Here's my contribution: Meaningless lyrics One or 2 simple musical phrases repeated several times, monotony of this only alleviated by gratuitous key change (see above) Variety of staging devices to distract audience members from monotony of song , eg really weird costumes, bizarre dancing, fire on stage etc etc.... |
