Hi all,
Could someone knowlegeable about these things be able to advise me what sort of grade level the third violin part for Brandenburg no. 3 is? I had a hack/sightread through it last night with my string group, at our usual fast and furious pace that we play everything in, and although my tone, phrasing and dynamic range left an awful lot to be desired, I managed the notes and rhythm quite well for most of it. (I'm well out of my depth in the group but it's an informal just-for-fun group, so they let me join in where I can, bless them!) thanks! Kate |

Simply looking at notes and bowing actions, there's nothing in it that a Grade 4-standard player couldn't be expected to know how to play, and I've done it with school groups where the violin 3 player was around this level. However, as you've realised, it's relentless nature once up to speed, coupled with the stylistic requirements, are the real challenge. Thankfully, it's such fun to play that it can withstand a lot of rehearsal!
