Hi, only just noticed this new forum and very pleased.

I've taken music for GCSE and our first composition has been started!! I've chosen to do Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and I'm pretty stuck for ideas, I thought about maybe making it jazzy-style. I haven't worked anything out!!!!! I know some techniques eg. change chords, change melody, tempo, key etc. but still unsure.

Any tips?

Thanks
Soph

Have a look at Mozart's 12 variations on it. That will give you some ideas.

If you want to write something in a jazzy style why not have a look at some of the books available on playing jazz or popular piano in your local music shop? You might get some more ideas from these than from Mozart. It would be too easy to borrow some of his ideas and end up with a parody I think.

Try changing the rythyms, inversions etc. A variation should be based on the tune, not actually different ways of dressing up the tune.

I think Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is by far covered by Mozart (in a classical sense). Why not try doing a melody a bit less common. It would be far to easy to fall in the trap of doing a popular tune like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and making a mess of it if you know what I mean.

Also look at Rachmaninov's variations of a theme by Paganini or perhaps make up your own theme. I did ground bass at got an A* though it was hard to keep an interest when just keeping the bass line the same

Just a thought. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Thanks for the advice. I've actually got started by doing work on Cubase and wrote a jazz bass line and drum beat and I've got some ideas. Thanks.
