It isn't the octave boxes. Different sound, just like fat spitting in a frying pan. Quite loud and I find very annoying.

I have suffered something similar a couple of times and it definitely felt like it was a reed problem but actually turned out not to be. Once it was indeed an octave box. It was weird, though - there must have been some disruption in the air flow that made me think (feel/hear) there was a problem in the reed.

Could you please stop letting your bunnies make pancakes inside the oboe reed, it makes a terrible noise??

I watched Graham Norton's show last night. Sandi Toksvig was a guest on there. She laid on the floor and did an impression of Danish bacon (she being Danish herself) curling up in the frying pan. I was willing her to make frying pan noises, but alas she didn't. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

The frying pan noise was what one of my teachers called the noise I was describing, so it must be quite a commom strange noise. I have heard it quite a lot. Some people make it for entire days on courses and never seem to investigate where it might be coming from.
