I'm lying here on my sickbed listening to the news, and have just heard of the loss of this great actor.

Will remember him in Brassed Off and The Usual Suspects in particular.

English actor, probably most famous for the two films DC mentioned, and for In the Name of the Father, for which he was Oscar nominated.

Real nice guy - met him last year at a Grimethorpe Colliery Band concert where he came on as "guest conductor" for the William Tell overture.

Terrific actor and, apparently, really nice man too, considering he had face that often seemed right for villains (brilliant Hakeswill in Sharpe). I bought In the Name of the Father just before Christmas, but haven't watched it yet and it's a long time since I saw it in the cinema. Perhaps tonight, with a glass of wine. Cheers. RIP

Very sad news. I loved "Brassed Off" in particular and have always had a weak spot for anything to do with prehistoric monsters. of the Jurassic Park kind. I didn't know much about him but he seems to have been a nice person.

I went to see King Lear at the Everyman theatre in 2008 which was Liverpools capital of culture year, Pete Postlethwaite made a return to the Everyman where his career started and was a very fine actor

I'm not surprised. I think it's one of the few pop intros where people fall silent to listen to it. (Not sure it counts as 'pop' but can't think into which catergory it falls.)
