Does anyone know of a website where it is possible to see the first page of music which has been set for grade 6 up for the trombone?

I did think of looking for some of the baroque pieces on the IMSLP website but most seem to be either arrangements of something originally written for another instrument or there is not enough detail (particularly for those on the Trinity list) to be able to identify the piece accurately.

Ideally I would like to be able to see some examples before next Friday.

Failing that, does anyone know of a shop in London or Cambridge which has the music in stock where I could go and browse this summer?

I'm not a brass player nor can I tell you about where you can see the first page of pieces online.

However, I can tell you about shops in London that you can check stock in before you go.

Usually if I'm in central London I start at Tottenham Court Road tube and go to Argents on Demark Street. As it is part of musicroom.com you can search on on their website and then under buying options for each piece see if there are any in stock in Argents. They also, helpfully, give lists of music by exam board and grade.

Then I go across the road to Foyles on Charing Cross Road. They don't seem to have lots of trombone music in stock but I haven't checked the books you might be interested in.

Then cut across Soho Square to Wardor Street for Chappell of Bond Street (obviously no longer on Bond Street!).

Then head down towards Liberty and just before you get there stop at the Schott Shop on Great Marlborough Street. I'm not sure you can check their in store stock online, but they are always very helpful on the phone.

The walk from start to finish is only about 15 minutes, but the time spent rummaging in the stores can take all day. Between them all I'm you'll have a good chance of getting what you want.

Good luck!

Thanks Onion. I knew about Chappells and Foyles and went to both at Christmas without much success, but I didn't know either of the other two so will give them a try in the summer.

In my experience, shops don't stock a lot of trombone music, although sometimes you can find some real gems which have been in stock for decades, but are not actually exam pieces. You could be lucky with the shops already mentioned; I know Chappells has a very extensive sheet music department. Also, if you have access to a school or music service, they may have stuff they could let you see. I have some G6+ trombone music, but I am not in London or Cambridge.

Maybe just hunt down some trombone teachers, and see if they could photograph the first pages of what they have and email you?

Onion's list is is pretty comprehensive. You could also try Phil Parker in Crawford St which is near Baker St. They're a specialist brass shop and they stock music. You could then hop on a Metropolitan or Circle Line from Baker Street tube to Barbican and visit Chimes which is almost next door to the Guildhall School of Music - it's where my son gets all his bassoon music.

Probably worth ringing to see what they have in stock before you make the journey: I've always found the staff in music shops are very helpful.

Chimes also has a shop in Kensington near the Royal College of Music and at at the Royal Academy which is near Baker Street. The Barbican shop is quite small (compared to Chappell's or Schott) and whilst they have a lot of music in stock they may well not keep much trombone music so it's probably worth emailing them to see what they have in stock. They are very good at getting in anything but I've found that even fairly standard piano tutor books/repertoire often has to be ordered and it will take a week to come in. You can email them @chimesmusic.com - either barbican@ or kensington@... The Academy shop may not be open outside the academy term times but I don't know.

You used to be able to order music from June Emerson on approval and return what you did not want mind you you had to pay up front!
