Ever since September when I tried sbhoa's Hanson at Woodford Green, I've wanted a clari with a better-positioned register key and 'A' key than my clari had.
I never got round to going to Hansons, but I've been shopping today with hillyb and St George and ended up with a Leblanc Esprit - wood, silver-plated keys, and most of all, the register key and the A key are easier to play. It sounds a lot better than my old one did, particularly the Bb throat note, and I got a Vandoren 5V mouthpiece as well. I tried a few mouthpieces and it was amazing what a difference it made. We spent so long there that I didn't have time to look at soprano saxes in the end, but the soppy I tried when Barry came up to Leeds last June has been on my mind ever since and I'm going to meet hillyb there another day to choose one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) Thanks for your advice on the clari, hillyb, and thanks for putting up with my squawking St George! Congratulations with your clarinet, Skylark! Leblancs are beautiful instruments, both in sound and in appearance. Have fun with it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clarinet.gif) !

Thanks everyone (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Andrew, to be honest it looks very much like any other clarinet, apart from the position of the register key and 'A' key which was much better than on the other instruments I tried. I'll have a look with my camera tomorrow, and if the difference is noticeable on a picture, I'll post it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
