No, though Holliger (Swiss) has a thin, clear, or brilliant sound depending on your attitude.

Ah yes, it's true. And his sound isn't really popular here, despite recognition of his great contribution...

"Here" I say... as if I hadn't landed in the UK this morning!

I've never heard of anyone accusing a German player of sounding "thin", though. Have you?

No, though Holliger (Swiss) has a thin, clear, or brilliant sound depending on your attitude.

I think we shouldn't compare Holliger to German players. Holliger is Swiss, as you said, and was trained in Bern (by a teacher graduated from the Paris Conservatory) and in the Paris Conservatory. No relation to German players whatsoever.

Yes I know, but he comes from Langenthal which is German speaking, so perhaps he should have a German accent. Only joking (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

You mean, like Andrew's "French accent" on his Lorée?

My French accent seems to be improving, no thanks to the appalling reeds I am playing on..I must get some more..these are beyond rescue..if I take anymore cane out of them I will be scraping the backside of the other blade.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I do find that a small re scrape does pick them up at the end of their truely useful life, that and a soak and a clean in some sterident..bucks them up no end..

Sterident? That's a new one. I can't see me going out for Sterident and fag papers though. Sends out all the wrong messages.

Emsoboe was administering some TLC to her Saxophone tonight. She has a little tub with a set of mini screwdrivers, cigarette papers, key oil and lighter fuel. I wonder what that says about her (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Maybe I should get her some sterident....

Looks like we may be in search of a new Oboe with a 3rd Octave key.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but how do you clean your reeds? How long do you soak them for? How much of the reed do you soak? do you do anything to try and remove material from inside the reed?

I gently remove any gunk on the outside of the reed with a fingernail, and my teacher said to use the corner of a piece of card to clear out anything from inside the reed.

I am pickingup bits from my teacher but I still feel incredibly ignorant about reeds! Not starting with a specialist teacher I feel like I have a huge gap in my knowledge!

Its not a stupid question..its perfectly rational..

I guess I pop the reed in up to the wire in a glass of water and disolve a half tablet of sterident which bubbles away and cleans the reed..when I have soaked the reed I take a very fine piece of wet and dry sand paper( very very fine grade) and slide it between the blades of the reed and very gently lift it through the upper paart of the reed through the tip and whisk away any debris. You could also try just using a Plaque or even a rizla, really anything that will gently clean out the inner part of the reed, but the wet and dry sand paper is the best..then I simply let the reed dry..Look its only a last minute quick fix and is no remedy for replacing a reed, you may get s little more life out of the reed but facts have to be faced, new reeds are needed..

The sterident effervesces and helps clean the reed so it kind of makes sense really..Bocasen used to be great but they took it off the market..it was perfect for cleaning reeds as it sterilised them and anything nasty that lay within the cane itself. You could also try a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide but be warned it burns the skin and bleaches out clothing etc so always wear rubber gloves..

Am getting excited about one of the courses I am going on this summer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I have just found out that Nicolas Daniel will be giving a recital one evening and giving a private (ie not open to the public) masterclass for the course participants.

What's Sterident? Is it a mouthwash? That's what we do in CR... especially good for clearing out gunge in reeds in a humid climate...

Close. They're fizzy tablets for cleaning false teeth. Of course, I only know 'cos my dad used them!! Along with Kolynos "dental fixative". Anyone remember that?

Having just read a thread in the general music forum about "Newmoon Insurers" I have just given them a call and got my insurance sorted out FINALLY.

They are former people from what was the lovely British reserve insurance who in the end became Allianz, the latter who I found ghastly to deal with..I gave up in the end.

Anyhoo the word is get thyselves along to Newmoon insurance and get a quote, they are very reasonable price wise, they dont shove you from one person to the next nor do you get put through to a call center in Manilla, you will deal with musicians who know what they are talking about..He could even spell Loree and I suspect Marigaux would roll of the tongue equally well if he went to a spelling bee.

Dont leave your valuable instruments uninsured, it has hung like a cloud over me for months and remember my last Oboe (lost in a housefire) was not specifcally covered and that still haunts me to this day.

http://www.newmooninsurance.com/

give them a call..
