Everything you mentioned here sounds incredibly difficult:( I see I have a lot of studying to do.

It's very easy to get outfaced, but take it a step at a time and you'll find it much more achievable. Can you try and get to a music shop to have a look at some of the theory books to see which might suit you best?

Oxfam shops often have secondhand music books. Ask at your local shop if they have an Oxfam shop in the area which specialises in stocking secondhand music - some Oxfam shops act as a "clearing house" for all the secondhand music which comes to their area.

Or you could try an online resource such as musictheory.net - you'll find lessons, exercises and tools there.

My piano teacher is pretty well connected I've not doubt he could get ahold of a few Grade 5 exams.

Possibly, but the exam papers only test what you've learnt, and they only test a portion of all the elements which might crop up in a G5 paper so you need to make sure that you don't miss anything.

It seems I have a lot of practice ahead of me.

You have lots of time - you only got G3 fairly recently and although you're now working on G5, it's likely that you won't be taking G6 for a while, which is when you'll need the G5 theory. Start now, take it steady and you'll probably find that it's easier than you might be expecting (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thank you for the detailed reply.
