Hello,
I have just got a distinction in my grade 8 singing exam, I actually have a BA in Music performance but never got around to actually doing grade 8! I am thinking about doing the DipABRSM but looking at the prerequisites it seems if you have 'A university music degree with verified performance modules, such as final-year recital (required: copy of degree certificate, breakdown of results, and reference from course tutor/ instrumental teacher affiliated with university)' then it would act as a prerequisite for the dipABRSM and could work towards the LRSM? In the the final year we did recital preparation and a performance module in which I did a piece from the Dip list. Does anyone have any idea if they think that would be suitable and if it would be a good idea to leap to the next diploma? thanks Jenni (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Are you thinking of a performing or teaching diploma because that makes a difference with the theory side (you need grade 6 theory for the teaching dip). I doubt you'd be allowed to miss out the dipABRSM to go straight into the LRSM, it's a pretty big leap from grade 8 to dipABRSM, you are able to enter for the performing dipABRSM though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It's hard to say what standard you are at and therefore if skipping to LRSM would be the best thing to do. You'd be best to talk to somone qualified enough to say if you would be capable of going in at that level such as your teacher. Since you got a distinction in grade 8 it mightn't necessarilly mean you would even get a pass at DipABRSM level never mind LRSM. Your BA in Music should act as a prerequisite for both the performance and teaching diplomas as at that level you are even beyond grade 6 theory.

I used my degree as a pre-requisite for LRSM. I had to send them a breakdown of marks for the degree, along with the report written on my performance.
However, I had done my G8 er...23 years ago, and my ALCM 21 years ago, so was quite happy to make the jump to LRSM - it is a VERY big step from G8 - it really depends on how much performing/repertoire you've done? Remember it's not just the difficulty of the music, but the overall performance aspects that makes it such a leap. |

The indicative standard of the LRSM is the final (third) year performance standard required for a performance degree at one of the royal colleges. If both you, and importantly the AB, feel your degree is equivalent in standard to one of these (or indeed it is one of these) then you shoudln't have a problem; if you're doubtful do the dipABRSM first, that's equivalent to the end of the first year at one of said institutions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif).

Hey, has anyone heard of situations whereby after passing LRSM one can proceed on to FTCL without LTCL? i wanted to take FTCL instead of FRSM but i don't have LTCL. any advices? May I be the first to offer the boring and conventional answer to this one? I strongly recommend to you that you read the Trinity syllabus if you plan to do the FTCL. As well as all sorts of other valuable guidance to help your preparations, you will find on page 8 the list of qualifications that Trinity will accept as an alternative to LTCL as a prerequisite to take FTCL. And eighth on that list is LRSM. The syllabus is downloadable from the TrinityGuildhall website (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Best of luck |

I passed my LRSM and then proceeded to enter FTCL without an LTCL. So it can definitely be done (unless the rules have changed since then, it was 2003). |
