I just wanted to post a happy comment (happy tired comment) because I had 2 concerts this weekend and they both went really well.
Yesterday was magic flute ov, a little rest for a flute choir Handel piece, Parry's Symphonic Variations (huh? I hear you all saying - all you need to know is (a) it's a bit Suk-like in style and (b) it's exhausting but it is quite rewarding), a suite written for our orchestra by a local composer which was also quite taxing, the first movement of the Dvorak wind serenade, and Beethoven's 5th. No 2 son fell asleep in the 3rd mvmt of the beethoven - sitting about 6 feet away from the orchestra. Today was Carmina Burana and Polovtsian Dances. I am still rather at a loss as to why anyone would think that the Borodin, sung in English, by a stationary choir accompanied by 2 pianos and some percussion, would make a good concert finale; to me this seemed deeply old-fashioned and i really thought we needed dancing girls or at the very least furry hats and boots to make an impact, but it went down a treat with the audience. Just wanted to share, really, as the orchestra (not to mention the conductor!) has really worked hard to get to the stage where we could play yesterday's music, and the tenors and basses have something like quadrupled the quality of their output for the Carmina Burana. Oh and the baritone soloist was just jaw-dropping. So, tired, but happy! |
