I have actually read a couple of Harry Potters - in my opinion, the story isn't as good as any of the above, and neither is the quality of the writing.

Well, I don't think the first couple are really indicative - everything gradually becomes more intricate, as befits a coming-of-age series. I think the main reason I preferred HP to those you mentioned and others that are similar is that I find a most fantasy extremely pretentious - I used to read a lot of fantasy when I was younger but the only fantasy series I retain any fondness for are HP and Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels (which I love). But in the end it's all a matter of taste... apple crumble or astrophysics? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I've read all the Harry Potter books and enjoyed them.
I've also read King Lear and GreatExpectations.
Not been tempted by Twilight yet though.

I love the Harry Potter books, but can't see how Twilight can come anywhere near...and yes Lilly, they're fairly popular on our side of the pond too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)...especially the films (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif)

Interesting - I never thought of any of those I mentioned as pretentious. I do find a lot of modern fantasy and SF to be pretentious though. Unfortunately including HP... but Terry Pratchett (of which I have all of them) is about as un pretentious as you can get (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

LOTR did also stop growing on me (and in fact the opposite - what's the opposite of growing on you?), I just don't like it that much now. There's another heresy spoken

Driving home from organ/choir practice, approached the shops where there is a bank on the corner. (People here regularly lose the use of their legs and park on double yellow lines in order to get to the ATM more quickly.)

Well, there was another one getting out of his Jag, on the yellow lines, opening wide his door, like they usually do, and stepping into the middle of the road. He just saw me in time and stepped back.

Yes, it was 2-Jags himself, only instead of going to the ATM he marched smartly towards the chip shop.

This morning I had to get my 14 year old son to a services for 6am as he is off to World Scout Jamboree for nearly 3 weeks. 5 am I wake him up "It's time to get up".

His reply was "Why?"

This is a once in a life time trip- he has fund raised for 18 months to raise ?2000, gone through a 3 day selection process to get through and there will be over 40,000 young people there from all over the world and he forgets he's going!!!!!

Oh yeah- he's also going to 3 different countries in the time!
