I have this terrible annoying distraction, and its a little weird - I tell people about it and it just goes whoosh over their heads lol.
Whenever I play the piano I get an itchy nose lol. Everytime and the more I concentrate the itchier my nose gets LOL So when I learn a new piece its agony coz every 5 seconds I'm rubbing my nose. I always thought it was psychological but since I don't get it so much on my digital piano I now swear its the subtle vibration from the piano that for some reason resonates at the tip of my nose! When I play the clarinet, my hair gets in my eyes and it annoys me.
When I play the piano, I get distracted when someone turns on the kettle! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I really should remember to close the door! |

Q: Have you seen a doctor? A: No, just these hundreds of little children . . . (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Tinnitus..it drives me up the wall and makes playing/singing very difficult sometimes. |

My little brother and sister always sit there making stupid comments, or trying to sing, while I'm practising the piano. My brother likes to get out his saxophone and start to play as well. (He never practises normally!) Also, whatever I'm practising at some point I get yelled at to set the table/empty the diswasher/feed the cat/etc. etc. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Eyes watering. So far I've not had it when I've been practising, but I've had it three times in lessons. We start a new piece, and then I can' see a thing because one eye is watering and even if I shut that eye I can't keep up with where I am. So now I arm myself with a tissue-in-pocket prior to a lesson, so it is only a short interruption when it happens.
My eyes do do this at other random times too, not just lessons! Usually it's something inconvenient like I'm driving or trying to eat dinner... |

I start itching all over! Plus the kids always coming up and asking me questions right in the middle of a piece that needs all my concentration.
I have noticed my daughter itches too when she plays (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |

Also, whatever I'm practising at some point I get yelled at to set the table/empty the diswasher/feed the cat/etc. etc. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) But of course you know that practising anything gives everybody everywhere free licence to interrupt, ask questions, fail to answer the phone for you, and make all sorts of perfectly reasonable requests / commands. I have trained my husband......he now stands (im)patiently by the piano / violin / flute while I finish whatever piece / scale I'm playing. I think he began to get more patient when he started learning fiddle, as he started to realise how much concentration it took. Give the non-instrumentalists in your family (if there are any) an instrument to learn, and your problems will not be over, but you will get more uninterrupted practice time. |

When playing my flute, I get feedback or similar in my right hearing aid, and it sounds like Moaning Myrtle singing over my right shoulder................tunelessly and with nothing to do with the music I am playing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Quite often when I am having a tinkle on the piano, my wife comes in and wants to go through a song, anthem, duet etc which is coming up soon. Good job I love her! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

Dad likes to stand at the bottom of my stairs (my bedroom is the little attic (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ) and whistle. Sometimes he whistles along, sometimes he whistles slightly ahead or behind, to put me off, and will keep going until I give in and join in where he's whistling. Sometimes he whistles something completely different i.e. a song, or another piece I'm learning, or simply a scale. Sometimes he sings. Sometimes he puts on music downstairs and blasts it out, trying to drown out my noise: this is when I get the piccolo out. Sometimes he gets out his clarinet. Sometimes he gets out his saxophone. Sometimes he calls the rest of the family to gather at the bottom of the stairs and whistle together. Sometimes they have a competition to see who can drown me out/put me off/make me stop first.
I think they think it's funny. The other day my sister and I had a competition with the piano (clavinova) and piccolo. I won (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Only one distraction in our house. It's brown with four legs and it's supposed to be a Chocolate Labrador (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Except of course when it's sitting on the feet of the person playing the piano, pushing it's nose up the bell of the Oboe and trying to climb in the bell of Bari Sax (when it was a bit smaller). It quite fancies the idea of playing Recorder. At times such as those it's a huge distraction. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |
