A few years ago every choral group in the land seemed to be singing Vivaldi's Gloria. Before that it was the Britten Ceremony of Carols. What is the in piece to sing at the moment I wonder.

One group in our area has just done "Elijah" and there's another performance of it planned for May.

I'm so delighted to have recently joined a brand-new and lovely choir where the conductor is focusing on sound and technique and seems to have no interest in having us sing endless Glorias, Requiems etc...

We've just done Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle and Faure's Cantique de Jean Racine (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). It would be quite nice to do something that's not 'holy' for a change.

You would have liked our concert tonight then - Choir sang Britten, Howells, Holst, Parry, Monteverdi, interspersed with kids from local primary school, soloists from the various pieces doing a turn - Handel violin sonata, songs by Head and Ireland, assorted unaccompanied carols and a few for the congregation and even some African children's songs. A veritable pot pourri of musical moments... Sounds good. I would absolutely love to be able to go a concert which just included a real mixture of short items rather than these mammouth extravaganzas. David I expect this goes in areas as my last 4 concerts have been real mixtures and I'm looking forward to singing works such as Ceremony of Carols in January and, dare I say it, Messiah in March! Did ceremony of Carols last year, and the boys and girls here are doing it next Sunday (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) - love it!
Other highlights this year- Rejoice in the Lamb, Monteverdi Beatus Vir and Allegri Miserere. |
