Tonight I witnessed the senseless death of a juvenile bird, who - in mortis - I named Blackie.

Blackie was an adolescent blackbird, keen of beak and tidy of wing who mistook a reflection in my conservatory windows for a real ivy vine.

The noise of the impact was something I shall never forget. He fell heavily onto the patio and I watched dumbstruck as his beak twitched for a few seconds, breathing his last.

The emotion of the situation affected me so much I just knew I had to share it with you, my forum friends, and hope that you can join me in signing a book of condolence to keep the memory of dear Blackie alive.

RIP, young soul, I shall miss your cheeky chirp and sparkling eye.

Is it too soon after the incident to formulate a conspiracy theory? Already I feel that MI5 may have had a hand (wing?) in his too-soon demise...

RIP Blackie!
Mr B - a very similar thing happened - I was on a bus travelling on the Greek mainland a couple of years ago. A bird flew into the front upstairs windscreen, and for a few seconds was spreadeagled against the glass to the dismay of all inside, before slipping from view.

Does anyone else have a family of blackbirds in their garden with a white feather in their backs? I used to think it was just one bird, but it isn't - the white isn't always in quite the same place, I've been noticing it now for a number of years, and I've now seen more than one at a time .
(sorry Mr B - back to the more serious topic in hand).

Yeah, you do! I used to live near Birstall (north side of Leicester) - there's a big country park there, and there are loads of kingfishers. Lovely.
