Hi! This is my first time using this forum so I appreciate any help.

I have a 4-year girl who seems to be quite talented at the piano. Without any teacher or formal training, she is able to play 4 songs; most with her sisters teaching her by showing how they play. Rhythm out in some places.. but you can pick out the tune. And now she is using her kindergarten music book to learn other songs that she is singing in school. This is all on her own initiative; without any pushing or shoving.

So, the question is: can anyone recommend a good piano teacher who is willing to do home visit to North Point, Hong Kong? Preferably someone who is very experienced and able to encourage this creative spark. Also preferably someone with kids of their own as well so that they can motivate during the lessons. Seem quite a pity to let it die.

We have searched all over the internet and most advertisements are by young fresh graduates with very little teaching or life experience. We have already tried a few of these with the older kids .. and they are not working out very well.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers
Jean

Hi Jean,

This is a UK-based forum and I'm not aware of any regular members on here who are based in Hong Kong. I think you would probably be better asking somewhere where people are familiar with Hong Kong and might know teachers there.

As with other areas of education, the approaches to music teaching in the UK tends to differ to that in South East Asia. It would be unusual here for a 4 year old to start formal piano lessons rather than more general musicianship based ones (most piano teachers here wouldn't take anyone that young for actual piano lessons). Have you tried asking in local music shops in your area? Most music shops here keep lists of local teachers (note, these are lists of teachers in the area not lists of recommended teachers).

Good luck with finding something for your daughter. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hi Flossie

Thanks for the thoughts. Local music shops (well, at least the one I know) offers piano lessons themselves. And most of them will provide very inexperienced teachers as their rates are cheap and the shop can earn a margin from getting them students.

With the older kids, I tried one of the teacher at the music shop once, The teacher was bad - at the first lesson - she was just pointing out how bad the kids are, wanting to use her own books (the teachers get a cut on the books if they buy more books from the shop) and not even bothering to build rapport with the kids. The kids shuddered at the thought of going back and I had to cancel further lessons.

Thanks for the note about the age - am aware of that. And thus, looking for someone who is willing and able. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
