I'm having it 10/march. I'm probably going to stick with composing to words, as (I feel) I'm better at that then composing for instrument.
However, without my piano, I can only manage simple melodies in my head. Will I get penalised for writing too simple a tune? eg. first 4 bars and second 4 bars are almost similar |

In my experience, the simpler the better. Just writing the same four bars twice would be overdoing it, but if the two halves were very similar and the first ended on the dominant while the second ended on the tonic (for example) you could have a pretty good tune there - and without any complexity which could lose you marks if you didn't get it absolutely right.
