Hi - I was wondering if I could ask for some advice?
I'm on mid-semester break this week traveling with friends, and I'm finding it hard to get away for a bit and find a time and place to practice singing on my own. I really really really want to practice every day so I don't slip back into bad habits. But, I'm too shy to do it when anyone else can hear me since I have a lot I need work on before I sound consistently decent. Does anyone have any suggestions, either for finding potential places to practice, or for drills that aren't too loud? Will it take long to get back on track if I do take a week off from singing, or would doing a few simple vocalizes a day be enough? Unfortunately, I didn't think this would be an issue before I left, and I won't be able to contact my teacher until I return ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

As you are only going away for a week, you may find your voice benefits from the break especially if you are busy doing other things with friends.
I am tempted to say enjoy your holiday and get back to practising when you return. |

As you are only going away for a week, you may find your voice benefits from the break especially if you are busy doing other things with friends. I am tempted to say enjoy your holiday and get back to practising when you return. I would support this opinion: it is perfectly usual for professional singers to 'rest' their voice after a run of performances, and perhaps this can be applied after a number of regular practise sessions where real work has been achieved. It is quite common for some singers to have a 'day of silence' when even normal talking is minimised or avoided. This allows the natural swelling that occurs with vocal folds to reduce, and the natural strain - not stress - of simply using the vocal mechanisms dissipates, allowing the vocal folds to refresh themselves. |

I would agree that a rest will do no harm for a week - but if you feel like you want to do something then just some simple vocalisas will keep you in trim.
Enjoy your holiday!! |

Just come back from an 8 day break. I managed a 1 hour practice about mid way through and that sounded appalling to me.
Did a daily warm up today and the voice is better - probably rested - and has a "freeness" about it. In short, don't worry too much. |

Thank you very much for your advice. I didn't get a chance to respond earlier, but I was able to read your posts, and decided to follow your suggestions and just take a break for week .
We'll see how this week's lesson goes! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |
