Grade 3 Tuba has F sharp major.

You know why this is? Because the list of tuba scales are the ones with the same fingerings as the equivalent trumpet/Eb Bass grade, and pays absolutely no regard to the difficulty of the key signatures. Typical un-joined-up AB thinking, I'm afraid.

Should they get different fingerings via different scales, depending on which clef their pieces are in? What if they use a mix of clefs in their pieces?

The tuba's a very strange beast,
Bass clef tuba, the flats worry least.
Eb Major's a doddle
Sharp keys just seem like twaddle,
Flats are lovely, but sharps are off-piste.

Treble clef tuba's not quite the same,
It transposes - 'Eb Bass' now the name.
So they get used to sharps
As they make all their parps.
Hope you've got that. (Though my rhymes are lame.)

Hi, I was hoping you'd be able to answer my questions:

I am taking my Grade 6 Flute exam in a few weeks.
I wanted to know:
- When doing the scales, is it in even notes (not long tonic)?
- When you do slurred scales, when do you need to tongue - eg is it the first note of each octave, or not at all?

My flute teacher wasn't very sure when I asked her, cos she specialises in sax.

Hello Chief Examiner

In case you have not seen my pleas for help ....

Can you please tell me what a "R" Theory paper is? I see the normal A,B,C and S designations in the past papers.

The reason I ask is that I need to track down a copy of the 2002 Grade 5 Theory "R" paper. It is essential that it is this exact paper because this is the one for which the RNIB holds a BRAILLE copy which was used for an examination.

My daughter is teaching a blind student and will be wanting to enter her for her grade 5 theory (has grade 5 flute, and wants to progress). However, she, as the sighted teacher, needs a "normal" copy from which to teach, given that the student will have her music parts converted to "braille music", which is a different representation to the staves we all know and love! So, it is vital to know how the transcription process worked as well as having a copy from which to work.

We have managed to get a copy of the 2003 "C" paper, for which there is also a braille version, so we at least have one copy to work from.

So, it would be good to know where to start looking for this "R" paper, and any help would be gratefuly received. Better still, a copy of the paper (slim chance I know).

The most likely place for someone to know would have been the Theory Forum, if it hasn't been answered there it is unlikely that anyone else knows anything better. Have you tried emailing or ringing the board directly? I've always found them very helpful and they maybe able to point you in the right direction.
