Following on from lottie's thread where she asked about an unlabelled instrument I wondered how do the experts tell who made an instrument?

Also how do they know if an instrument is what it says it is?
This comes after hearing the story of the person who thought they had a Klotz copy and found out it was an origional after the instrument had been dropped and damaged.

Who would you take an instrument to if you wanted to find out more about it anyway?

Years of experience looking at and making and/or repairing violins, I presume. There will be all sorts of clues, unnoticeable to the average punter, such as general shape, outline, arching, f-holes, tool marks, purfling, scroll and neck details, made on an inside or outside mould (even I can tell that (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ), varnish.....

My violin is a modern English one, modelled on a Guarnerius. When I first showed it to a friend, without telling him what it was, he immediately exclaimed, "Oh, I just love those Guarnerius f-holes!" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

These people also have a pretty fair idea of the potential sound of an instrument just by looking at the height and shape of the arching and the thickness of the plates, as well as the quality of the wood, of course. Useful if you are going to auctions!

I think Beare's are the no.1 people to go to, if you dare...

I went up to outside their front door, took one look at their building (which looks like some very posh house with drawn curtains from the outside) and run away (IMG:style_emoticons/default/eek.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

The people in Beare's are actually very nice, but they operate in a very rarefied world where a cheap violin costs 20k.

Miffy, we'll go in there next week as I might win the lottey this week, listen to this:

last sunday at work:
I assisted with 2 births 1 in the morning 1 in the afternoon
both waterbirths
both were the mother's second baby
both mother's names started with L (and were VERY similar too)
both were boys
both were 8lbs 13 oz
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

I had to play the lottery on that one, NEVER HAPPENED IN 12 YEARS OF BEING IN THE JOB!!! so I played both the Lotto and Euromillions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rofl.gif)

'course I may win 'zilch' but if I win we're both heading to Beare's and I'll buy you a violin and myself one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rofl.gif)

And then you can come on holiday to Austria and I can introduce you to the luthier in Salzburg I go to.. . who similarly thinks a cheap violin is 20K and a cheap bow is 3K... oh and you can buy me a present while you're here too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

it'll have to be a very big jackpot then as the list is getting longer here, more people wanting violins and a private jet too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Don't worry the bus from Salzburg airport to the violin shop is cheap - goes direct and costs 1 euro. So you can all come along!

I think I might have gone in once and then left rather hastily. I had only just started playing the vioiln as an adult and my teacher recommended them, along with Modern Music. Bit of difference (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) In the end I rented a Romanian violin from Modern Music.

It's ok, after Jojo has had her 'big win' on the lottery we'll all go in and try a few, leaving the chauffeur outside to keep the champagne on ice (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
