Completed Grade 5 piano on Friday - feels great to have the freedom to play what I want to again.
I intend to spend the next few months expanding my repetoire and improving my technique, rather than rushing on to Grade 6. |

Well done Booney...hope you get a good result.
I think it is important to have some consolidation time in between exams too. That's one thing as adult learners we can indulge in as there is no pressure to achieve certain levels by a certain time in order to get to Uni or music college. |

If you value your freedom so much, why are you even thinking about grade 6? What's wrong with waiting till you're at grade 7 or 8? I don't see the point. Are there really people who feel compelled to go up through the grades, one by one. That must be very sad. Take time out to discover yourself and enjoy music without having always the stress of exams at the back of your mind! Steve |

I think the reasons will vary and I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this issue. For me, exams are just a way of measuring my progress against an established standard, and making sure I am reasonably methodical in my approach to learning the piano. I recognise, however, that the exams aren't everything, and the most important thing is to enjoy playing! Overall, my aim is to get to a level of playing where I don't feel quite as frustrated as I do sometimes at not being able to play as fluently as I would like! I haven't made up my mind exactly when I start working towards another grade, but think probably in the summer next year - I will happily skip grade 6 if I feel I have made sufficient progress by then. |
