Hi, tomorrow I am off on a ten mile walk in the yorkshire dales.
I can't remember anything we were told in the lessons, so does anybody have any tips, what should i wear? take? etc.

Im getting assesed on it so the more info the better.

Wear.... walking boots/good trainers, tracksuit bottom outdoor type trousers with shorts underneath if you really want in this weather (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) , couple of Tshirts, fleece/jumper and a waterproof. (This was my friend's Duke of Ed kit list (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

Take a bar of fruit/nut chocolate with you, or a bag of mixed fruit/chocolate/nuts. Keep it in a pocket or pouch that you can get to easily along with a water bottle, and make use of both frequently (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) If you're navigating, map and compass, and don't set off too fast, keep a steady pace you can keep up with. Try to keep moving as much as possible, in this weather as soon as you stop you'll freeze! Matches in a waterproof bag and a knife. First aid kit if you know how to use it. Lip salve as well!

A decent rucksack (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Lots of water to drink -say at least a litre. You can still get dehydrated very quickly even in cold weather.

Definitely proper walking boots with ankle support. No jeans or trainers. It is very likely to be extremely muddy and slippery underfoot so I would recommend a walking pole - especially for going downhill.

I would always recommend walking boots rather than trainers - better soles, and they protect your ankles better too.....my sister could tell you all about outdoor stuff - she's in Mountain Rescue and works in an outdoor field centre as well as having led several D of E expeditions for her previous teaching job.....and definitely take some kind of high energy foodstuff with you (Kendal mint Cake is often recommended - although not to everyone's taste - instant high sugar burst!!!)

Hi thanks for the replies so far
this is what i have so far:

-map, compass etc (school are giving us those
-whistle
-torch
-lots of food & emergency rations
-first aid kit
-antiseptci hand wash
-pencil and paper

Clothes:
-tshirt
-thinish jumper
-thicker jumper
-waterproof
-thick socks
-tracksuit bottoms
-walking boots
-gloves

am i missing anything obvious??
Oh and I have a big litre bottle of water and i'm taking a smaller bottle as well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Matches or one of those handwarmer things I would. Maybe a thermos of tea/coffee/whatever? And I would never go on this kind of thing without my knife, its got to be one of the most useful things ever! If you've not got waterproof trousers I would take a spare pair of trousers, theres nothing more miserable than being wet and cold....

Something to put on the ground to sit on that will stop you getting damp, eg plastic bags

Handkerchiefs for a cold wet runny nose (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif)

Loo roll in case you don't last out to the end (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif)

I recommend the D of E website: I've just completed my Gold....

All the stuff people have listed is really helpful: just make sure the weight's not too much. If a daywalk pack weighs much over 5kg I'd be worried! You want to enjoy the walk, not spend the time staring at the floor, bowed under the weight of your rucksack.

Check the weather online beforehand: if it's going to rain, wrap all your stuff up in plastic bags or something: don't risk the "100% Waterproof" label being entirely accurate. And waterproof your boots. Make sure they've already been worn in... I'm sure you know all this, but I did my Silver in the Dales and it didn't stop raining for 3 days!

A good waterproof is essential. And take boiled sweets/peppermint creams.

Are you doing the 3 Yorkshire Peaks? It's worth a try (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hi everyone.
Thanks for the tips its all been really helpful!!

Just as some extra info if you would like to know, i'm doing a route from rosedale to lastingham (but we go far north then far west before doing a diagonal walk along a dismantled railway down to lastingham). It is part of my gcse sport studies assessment. I'm in a group of about 5 although theres only me and one other girl who actually have planned the route etc, but it should be very fun!

I will be leaving at about half 6am tomorrow eek!

One more point - Remember to do the ankle supports up on your walking boots!! The number of people on DofE who had ankle supports but didnt bother using them and then complained of twisted ankles was excessive!!

Had a good day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Weather was pretty brilliant, was slightly too hot and sunny when we were climbing a steep hill but the rest of the time there was a nice breeze which was good for walking in.
It took us about 4/5 hours ish. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif).

I might try doing another walk sometime I really enjoyed this. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
