My favourite organist is Olivier Latry. I attended a recital by him a couple of weeks ag. He played for one and a half hours without using any music. Famtastic! He is organist at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and the recital I attended recently was in the parish church of Melzo in Milan Italy. The programme consisted of Bach, Mozart, Alain, Durufle and his own stuff. GC reckons you mean to say he played "without using any score" It's a contradiction in terms to say that one can play without music. Erm... Logic-ly? GC My favourite organist is Olivier Latry. Dear ALL,
Has anyone listend to Wayne Marshall's Organ Classics CD? I forget where it was recorded now!! ARGHH!!! Plus what about the I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes with Jon Rutter and the Cambridge Singers? I am aware that most of the posts about him are unflattering, but I am trying to be fair - or at least seeking balance. Equi-ly, GC |

Like others, have varying opinions. Michael Harris is very good, but also right now like Catherine Ennis/Sarah Baldock Isn't that a bit biased picking your dad! What about your mum? How did you work that out- it was meant to be a joke (although he is good!) Mum is good as well. Do I know you from somewhere?? How about some women.......Jennifer Bate, Jane Parker Smith, Gillian Weir...to name a few (not to mention Marie-Claire Alain (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) )... [/quote] Maxine Thevenot. Canadian and now organist (with her husband, Iain Quinn) at the Cathedral of St John, Albuquerque. I recently bought her CD and there's a really good performance of the G major (Great) P and F. |

My favourite, as a person, is Paul S, who's a parish church organist, all round nice guy and my organ mentor. But I'm guessing that you're looking for answers featuring better-known performers...
For me, that would be Paul Griffiths for the combination of being a fantastic organist (I was very priviledged to hear him play Bach's Passacaglia & Fugue in C minor yesterday) and a nice guy (friendly and very free with his encouragement and advice). Like Paul S, he's the sort of person you can really look up to and want to be like one day. Solely for listening to, I'd go with David Davies. Can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is that he does differently to other people I've heard, but somehow he makes the music sparkle with life and energy and his improvisations are tremendously fun to listen to. I suppose the best way to explain it is that listening to him play makes me smile. I've heard people who are technically better players (though not by much), but who don't give it that extra un-explainable something that does it for me. |

I am a fan of Ton Koopman and particularly Kevin Bowyer for Bach
Jennifer Bate and Almut Roessler for Messaien Ian Tracey and Simon Preston are good all rounders I CANNOT STAND WAYNE MARSHALL, he plays a lot of stuff far to fast to try and show off ! |

My favourite organist is Sophie-Veronique Cauchefer-Choplin - she has a flawless technique, and an excellent talent for improvisation.
