My Flute (a Yamaha 211)
I was worried it might be duff (having never played one and not knowing what to look for) but Sarah-Flute was kind enough to "test drive" it for me the other day and she tells me I got a real bargain (thank you Sarah for this reassurance!) |

I won a whole load of music about a year ago, basically someone had messed up his grade 8 several years ago and couldn't bear to look at any of that music again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (he said he had carried on playing, but just couldn't face playing any of the stuff he'd learnt during that period).
It was all listed individually and virtually no-one else bid for any of it, and he'd obviously tried several pieces from each list before deciding on which to go for, so basically I got about half of the grade 8 flute syllabus (current one, not the new one) for about £12 including postage - I added it up in new prices and gave up at £120 - so a real bargain (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . However some of it is very heavily annotated by his teacher, luckily in pencil, but a bit too much to totally rub out, which I do find a bit distracting. I checked through it the other day and its about 50:50 gone:still there, on the new syllabus lists (don't know why I checked, since there's no hope of me ever doing g8, but I like to dream (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) ) Non-music stuff, not exactly a bargain, but a funny story - when my son was a toddler he had a favourite drinks cup which was quite posh and sturdy (i.e. expensive!), and had been a gift, so I had no idea where it came from. One morning we found that part of it had fallen into the bottom of the dishwasher and melted on the heating element. Disaster was not a strong enough word for it!!!! That lunchtime at work, I was browsing the internet trying to work out where to buy another from, and up popped an entry on ebay - not bid on, and ending in 1min 45 secs. I couldn't remember my password so yelled into the corridor, "can anyone sign me into ebay quickly?" - a colleague came straight in and logged in as themself, I bid about 50p for the cup with about 5 secs to go, and won it. My friend then paid immediately by paypal for me, including about £1.50 postage, and the cup arrived next morning in the post, just in time for breakfast (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Even better, my workmate reckoned he owed me a few quid anyway from lunch a few days before, and refused to accept any money! |

Or petrat's £14 garklein - I bidded on that for £7. Of course, £14 is a bargain but it's double what I offered, and thus I missed by a mile. ! One of the things I am most pleased with - it's a rat poison bottle! That does seem rather drastic Maizie if you don't mind me saying so. It was just an auction at the end of the day after all. Chinese 1/4 sized violin (with bow and case), bought just after last X'mas. I won with a 0.01p bid (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) but with p&p it came to £40 so not such a basement bucket bargain.......It is beautifully crafted, with a one-piece striped back that has a drawing of a dragon (my daughter's Chinese birth year). It sounds miles better than the Stentor she was using.
More importantly, the 'real' bargain, it gave her the impetus to play. I'd struggled to encourage her before then (even though SHE'd asked for lessons!) because she wouldn't play the Stentor as she didn't like the sound of the D string.....(she was right, it did sound foul! Dull with no warmth). With the new violin I changed the G and D strings but left the A and E as she preferred the sound of the steel strings (I agree with whoever posted in another thread - Dominant 'E's are terrible!). She is now the proud owner of a grade 1 cert with merit.....and I'm now looking for a 1/2 size with a dragon on the back....... |

My one and only ebay purchase was the Mendelssohn 'Leide Ohne Worter' which I got for a few pounds, and in good condition (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I think my dad got my sax from there as well, another good buy although it was quite battered, and still is!

My most recent buy was a puppet theatre and a bag of thirty-four puppets which came from a seller in Yorkshire and was collected by Skylark for me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/woot.gif) It cost me around £26 and has been great in lessons for getting shy pupils to sing and join in with music games.
Recently I bought a beautiful boxwood clarinet from a local junk shop for £42 and have just sold it on eBay to a professional clarinettist and restorer in Italy for a very good price. I am pleased that it is going to a player who will restore it to its former glory and use it. I feel that I have rescued it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

My best ebay purchase was probably daughter's Bass Recorder at a little over £200 it wasn't mega cheap itself. It did come in one of those hard cases that have a lift off tray and hold all sizes of Recorder. It also had a mate that it couldn't be parted from a dark wood descant with a lovely sound. I did really well last year from ebay as the s40 Oboe also came from there. |

That was a nice bass recorder, and the descant floating around with it was equally lovely! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |
