hi everyone! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

So what do you think about remixing classical music?
I'll post my opinion after reading some of yours...

You mean like all these diabolical Barber Adagio remixes? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) I don't like it at all. Arranging is one thing, remixing is another.

I don't mind it as long as it is done tastefully.

I do have a problem with Bond however, that string quartet/quintet/who knows, I never payed any attention-tet.

They just seem so fake and stupid. I doubt many of them can actually play to a high standard, they're just pretty faces.

i got a bond cd for christmas aaages ago. not sure what i think of it...it seems alright...but i wouldnt say any of them have got any stunning talent, although they play well together. its true they are all pretty....but is that all theyve got? i dont mind the barber's adagio remixes...it annoys me, however, when people think that THEY are the original pieces, and have never heard of the real thing...grr... xxx

I heared the other day a remix of an extract of Mozart's Symphny no 40 , It sounded like a heavy metal thing. I almost cried when i heard that! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

True, that.

I can't say I have a problem with it as such, but on the other hand I don't recall every hearing something like this that I've actually liked...

Though in a funny kind of way, the fact that a Mozart Symphony can be remixed to become heavy metal is a compliment to how well it was originally written!

I guess if it brings music to ears which would reject it if they knew its provenance, it might be OK....?
Bach remixed Vivaldi's music, after all!
But that doesn't mean I'd listen to the modern remixes of my favourites with any great pleasure! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (there again, I feel I'm stepping out a bit if I use much in the way of vibrato, so am definitely a bit of a dinosaur myself) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I do not fully understand what is meant by the term "remix". Does it mean that the piece is arranged in a different style? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

For me it depends mostly on the way it's done. Most are alright (I admit I actually enjoy listening to Bond from time to time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) ) but certain crazy dance/techno/trance remixes scare me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) They just sound like somebody fast forwarded the piece and added drums and mechanical digital sounds. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I don't know if this is what you mean, but what really annoys me are those CDs that take Fur Elise or Swan Lake or any other (overplayed) classic and just play the melody, with tacky strings, musicbox and other weird random things in the background... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I think that's the kind of thing people are getting at.

I don't mind if people do something imaginative with the music: for example, I have a CD of Emmanuel Pahud and Jacky Terrasson playing classical pieces as jazz tracks, but they haven't just taken the tune and put a jazzy backing track to it, the pieces are reworked as jazz pieces. It's a bit weird but a lot of fun, and I can dig that. There are a few people out there doing that kind of thing, not so much remixing as reinventing classical pieces, and even if I don't like all of them, I think it's very clever and actually something creative.

I get what you mean Sarah. I've not heard many, but I agree that some 'reworked' classical pieces or pieces 'in the style of' a famous work, can be quite clever and fun to listen to. The backing track type on the other hand... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I think it's good! I don't like classical music that much so when you mix it..it kind of makes it that bit "funkier!!"

I heard a dance piece recently called "Alton Towers" remix.

First of all, it is "In the Hall of the Mountain King," and secondly, a monophonic tune on a dance backing is just tacky.

It really bothers me when people do that, but I'd like to hear some of that jazz stuff. That sounds good.

I will get annoyed if anyone tries to rework a Bach prelude though.
