G'day to all,
Sorry to be so helpless - I've downloaded audacity and found my microphone but can't find where to plug it in on the computer. There's a headphone socket on the cd drive but I imagine that's for sounds out. Should I be pulling it out and looking in the back somewhere? Yes is the short answer. If you have speakers they may well be plugged into your sound card. If they are there should be two other holes lineout and microphone. If not I don't know.

Brilliant, thank you. I got my torch and crawled under the table to pull out the system and found the mic in socket.
Have been able to record myself playing F and G major scales (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) I'd rather not have known (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) I thought I sounded a teensy bit better than that! Back to the drawing board.

Ah, but when you listen again in a week or two and realise how much you have improved, suddenly it will seem like a brilliant idea!!

Yep! That's the best bit. Unless you have a really great mic and acoustics etc you're unlikely to sound wonderful on a home recording, BUT, that doesn't mean you can't hear the improvement over the weeks - and when you make a recording that sounds reasonably acceptable you will know that in Real Life ™ you must sound pretty good (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
